Well, it has happened. WhatsApp is now finally getting the much awaited Dark Mode on stable channel both for Android and iOS platforms. For all those who’re WhatsApp fanatics cum health enthusiasts, the news would come as not less than a surprise source of happiness.
As per the official WhatsApp blog, Dark mode for WhatsApp offers a fresh look on a familiar experience. It’s designed to reduce eye strain in low light environments.
Moreover, it goes by saying two of the design areas where WhatsApp has focused on to bring the all new dark avatar of green and white WhatsApp we’re used to. Which are –
- Readability: When choosing colors, WhatsApl wanted to minimize eye fatigue and use colors that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively. And,
- Information Hierarchy: WhatsApp wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using color and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out.
How to Enable?
Since the latest editions of the popular OSs, Android and iOS features a universal, system-wide dark mode toggle, users on these softwares can use dark mode by enabling it in system settings. On the other hand users on Android 9 and below can go through the steps given below.
Open WhatsApp, then tap More options > Settings > Chats > Theme.
Select from the following options:
- Dark: Turn dark mode on.
- Light: Turn dark mode off.
- System default (Android 10/iOS13): Enable WhatsApp dark mode to match your device settings. Go to device Settings > Display > turn Dark theme on or off.
