VLC is one of the major open-source, portable, cross-platform media player software developed by the VideoLAN project with over 3.5 million downloads worldwide. The audio-video media player was launched in 2001. On its 20th ceremony this month, VLC’s president Jean-Baptiste Kempf has announced that the app is all ready to get a major update this year, that even with a new UI.

According to Kempf’s statement, the new UI will be introduced with VLC 4.0 with a revised interface. He said that VLC is getting extensions to pull in third-party videos which means it will bring more online content. Moreover, eventually, the app is expected to support ad-related videos which could create financial support for VLC. Furthermore, VideoLAN is working on a new feature known as “Moviepedia Project”, a sort of IMDB competitor that will also include Wikipedia-style community editing. Along with these add-ons, the app will also get a new web version which will be powered by WebAssembly and JavaScript after the update.
WebAssembly is an open standard that defines a portable binary-code and a corresponding textual assembly language that facilitates interactions between such programs and their host environment. While JavaScript is a programming language that conforms to the ECMAScript specification. JavaScript is high-level, just-in-time compiled and multi-paradigm.
The date for the release of VLC 4.0 is not yet revealed but is expected to come soon.
