Samsung Patents 3D Face Scanning technology to take on Apple

Face Unlock has become a necessity these days in smartphones. Probably the most accurate face unlock is available on the iPhone X as it uses 3D scanning technology. In 2018, a number of devices are there that are offering a similar face detection hardware like Xiaomi Mi 8, Oppo Find X, etc. This time a step further has taken by the Korean giant Samsung. As per the latest details, Samsung is working on a 3D Face-scanning technology for its upcoming smartphones.

Recently a patent from U.S patent office has appeared according to which Samsung has patented a 3D face scanning technology. At present Samsung’s flagship, Galaxy S9 Plus offers Face Unlock functionality and to make it more accurate Samsung uses Iris scanning technology. Maybe with this new 3D face scanning, they will try to capture the market as this year Apple’s flagship was the bestseller. This time Samsung will leave no stone unturned and they might offer the most accurate face-scanning technology in the 2019 devices.

This 3D face scanning technology will involve the role of NIR lighting which we have seen on other devices as well. It will help a user to unlock the device using face unlock in extreme dark lighting conditions. As suggested by patent the sensor will be able to do: eye tracking, motion detection, night-vision, etc. We might see some similar tech in the forthcoming Galaxy Note 9, however, no leaks have suggested something similar yet. Most probably Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus will become the first handsets to sport this technology. For more Android stuff stay tuned to GoAndroid.
