For past few years, reports have suggested of Samsung working on its own GPU for smartphones and other connected devices. The Korean mammoth being the Global leader in semiconductor LSI business, the possibility of an in-house Samsung GPU is not at all beyond the imagination. Now, a newly emerged report once again confirms that Samsung GPU is indeed real and there is much more for us to get overwhelmed.
As per the source, Samsung has successfully designed a new mobile GPU which’d theoretically delivered a best ever leading performance/watt value. It’s also said that, the foundation of GPU is based on a novel architecture that could make it multi-platform capable ranging from smartphones to supercomputers.
The self-designed GPU by Samsung is said to be the first new GPU design in the past decade. To hit a new level of performance/watt, the architecture bundles multiple instructions into a group that can be executed in a single cycle.
The GPU project is reportedly codenamed as, SGPU – Samsung’s GPU. Interestingly enough, Samsung had hooked the renowned graphics chip designer Dr. Chien-Ping Lu, or CP last year under this project. His expertise and experience in this field has lead to the development of a noval GPU IP. Though when, where and on which device we’ll be able to witness the Samsung GPU is uncertain, it’s is speculated to see the light of the day early next year. And, highly likely to be embedded on the upcoming flagship Exynos chipset.
In case if you don’t know, Samsung’s in-house Exynose chipsets make use of ARM’s Mali GPU. It won’t be wrong to say that, Samsung hasn’t been self-sufficient only in GPU hardware so far. The firm has its own manufacturing units, powerful fabs such that all most all hardwares needed for its products came from its own kitchen. Hence, a self-sufficiency in GPU is something that Samsung might be looking forward to achieve soon.
