Qualcomm announces Snapdragon Satellite for Android smartphones

Qualcomm announced the world’s first satellite-based service for emergencies at CES 2023. The new technology does have two-way satellite-based messaging support for premium smartphones and beyond. Android smartphones with Snapdragon Satellite support will get two-way messaging communication. In addition, the brand has joined hands with Iridium to extract a 66ms low orbit across the globe. Snapdragon Satellite provides global coverage from pole to pole.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite: Compatibility?

The new function will require a smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor carrying an X70 modem. If your device does have both features, you will be able to use the Snapdragon Satellite feature.

However, not all supported phones will get this feature, it totally depends on the cooperation between the OEM and Snapdragon.

Device Support

The eligible smartphones launching in the second half of 2023 will have Snapdragon Satellite support. The supported device observes the Iridium weather L-band spectrum for uplink and downlink. Also, users have to be in an open environment to set up a satellite connection.

Initially, the satellite service will only be available for eligible smartphones in North America and Europe.
