OnePlus launched their latest smartphone, the 5T at an event in New York last week. The device is also going for sale tomorrow for the first time in many countries including India. And today, Mr Vikas, the General Manager of OnePlus India confirmed in an interview that the OnePlus 5 will be discontinued in favour of the 5T.
To recall, the newly announced OnePlus 5T is priced similar to the OnePlus 5 which was launched 5 months ago. The price starts at Rs.32,999 for the 64GB/6GB variant and goes upto Rs.37,999 for the 128GB/8GB variant. For the same price, you get better display and low light performance in the 5T. Hence, the OnePlus will be discontinued as people would go for the 5T.
Mr. Vikas said that every other brands launch new variant of their smartphones in coming months. In the same way, the 5T should be seen as another variant of the 5. He added that new generation launches only once a year from the brand. And there is no much change when comparing both except for the display and camera. He also said that some fans will be disappointed on the discontinuation of OnePlus 5 but it was the best device in the market when it was launched. As the competitors provide better specifications, they had to update their smartphone to sustain in the market.
Further, he also mentioned that he is happy how they are performing in the country based on IDC Q3 report which listed OnePlus having 25% market share in the premium smartphone category. And they will concentrate more on online than offline. He also said that there will be no budget and mid range offerings from the company in the future. They will only concentrate in premium range as people tend to buy more costlier device than their old ones.
