Facebook after launching the Messenger Lite app in a number of developing countries has now launched it in North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The app has been downloaded more than 10 million times and has recently been launched in India. Contrary to what you Asians might think, people there have data caps and patchy networks too. And many users there were hoping that Facebook would launch the data-saving app there too. Well, Facebook has heard them.
The Messenger Lite app is stripped down to bare basics and thankfully that is a good thing. It is a way to avoid the bloat for while still keeping the vital stuff. However, it is rolling out to Android only right now, not iOS.
This move from Facebook should work as a chain reaction for other apps like Twitter and LinkedIn to debut their own trimmed-down versions in those regions like it did in Asia. The Messenger Lite app is less than 10 MB and is available from the Play Store.
