OnePlus as a Chinese manufacturer has a huge advantage compared to its country rivals. It has very few devices in its portfolio. That means better software support and long term updates for users. That is always a good thing in the fragmented Android community. Here we have a list of OnePlus phones and our thoughts on when these will likely get the next new taste of Android or not.
The OnePlus 5 has just launched weeks earlier and the OnePlus CEO has already promised 2 years of updates for the OnePlus 3/3T. Therefore, we can presume the state of OnePlus 5 will be at least equal if not better in terms of updates. Android O is most likely a certainty and hopefully the next version Android 9.0 after that. The only question is when?
The OnePlus 3T runs on Oxygen OS 4.1.3 on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It is too early to say when the device will get the update but what we can say for sure is that it will be after the OnePlus 5. In December 2016, when the device was a flagship it received Android 7.0 Nougat. Concluding from this, we can say that this year it might take 2018 to have Android O on board.
The OnePlus 3 is a bit older than the OP 3T. So, OnePlus might prioritize the OP 3T a bit. But still, they are two flagships of the same year. That makes them eligible for two years of OS updates. Right now, OnePlus has half fulfilled its promise. It remains to be seen when or if OnePlus does justice to the other half.
The OnePlus 2 is right now on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. While Android 7.0 Nougat is promised for it, it hasn’t yet received the update officially. It should happen any day now. But this will be the last jump the OnePlus 2 will make.
Both these devices are unlikely to get Android 7.0 Nougat. They are currently on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Even though OnePlus X users have campaigned for the cause but it is a lost cause nonetheless.
