Android 13 Developer Preview 1 is live with UI changes, improved privacy, and more

A few months back, Google released the Android 12 OS that is considered as the “major overhaul to Android in years.” Even though there are a plethora of smartphones waiting to get the latest stable operating system, Google has started working on the next iteration. The first developer preview of Android 13 is live for the supported Pixel devices.

For the unaware, Developer Preview is a public program that allows developers to explore and test the unreleased features of the upcoming Android version. Also, the build is loaded with bugs, so, it is not recommended to daily users. Anyway, the Android 13 DP1 is available for Pixel 4 and the following devices, including the Pixel 6 series. The build is labeled as TPP1.220114.001.

Concerning changes, the new version carries a refreshed UI with improvements in Material You design and language controls. Moreover, along with other modifications, the version is more focused to enhance privacy and security. Check out the other features below.

Android 13 DP1 Features

Themed icons: The Material You theme will extend to all icons. They will match the device’s interface by adopting a part of the color palette.
Privacy: Photo picker allow users to share photos and videos with apps, without needing permission for all images.
Wi-Fi permission minimizes the location data usage, but still gives a list of nearby devices.
Language controls: The API will allow developers to identify their users’ preferred language that can also be set on a per-app basis.
Developer tools: More toggleable opt-in features to easily understand how each change individually affects apps. Also, it offers better-integrated apps with the Material You theme.

Android 13 Timeline

The Android 13 Developer Preview is now out and there will be two more DPs that will arrive in March. Following this, the version will complete the beta testing by June, hitting the “platform stability” milestone. To pen it down, Google is all set to roll the new Android iteration throughout this year and is tend to make it stable by Q4 2022.
