Sony is an over-enthusiastic OEM when it comes to releasing “same old” design phones. But, lags behind like third-tier Chinese companies when it comes to software upgrades. Case in point, We are easily halfway past September and the Xperia XA1, L1, and XA1 Ultra, which are mid-range devices, by the way, are getting a security patch. The thing is the Security patch is for August. Granted that this is a mid-range device, but Security patches are much easier to push than OS updates and many top OEMs regularly back such devices.
Back to the patch, the firmware version for the Xperia XA1, XA1 Ultra, and L1 are 40.0.A.6.135, 42.0.A.4.101, and 43.0.A.5.79 respectively. We don’t think this patch contains a fix for the Blueborne vulnerability that was found to be in millions of devices. Since Google just fixed that bug with the September security patch pushed for the Pixels.
The update doesn’t upgrade the OS version to anything. In fact, it remains 7.0. That means Android Oreo is way out of the league for these phones. In any case, we hope Sony doesn’t take this much time for the September fix that will be vital to squash the Blueborne bug.
