Finally in order to give competition to the Apple’s 64-bit smartphone chips, Intel unveiled its 64 Bit dual-core Atom Z34XX chip and quad-core Z35XX chip which will work on Smartphones and tablets. Its an awesome news that Intel has finished work on 64 bit processors and got success to run 64-bit version of Android’s Linux kernel that has been designed especially for its Silvermont low power SoC processor microarchitecture.
Intel announced two chips as stated above and are as named Merrifield and Moorefield – will be landing in 2014. The first one, Meerifiled will land in first half of and second one, Moorefield in second half of 2014. The starting price of the Meerifiled devices would be around $250 and Moorefiled packed devices will be expensive. Currently, There is little or no news about Google’s plans to support 64-bits in Android but Intel has gone ahead and added support itself.
We don’t want partners to be held up (by Google’s delay). And when Google does provide that, partners can just slot that code into place.
Features of Meerifield chips:
- 1.7 times improvement in single-threaded application performance
- 2X graphics performance than a previous Atom chip
- Render high-definition video at up to 60 frames per second
- The improved performance won’t sacrifice battery life.
“Intel knows 64-bit computing, and we’re the only company currently shipping 64-bit processors supporting multiple operating systems today, and capable of supporting 64-bit Android when it is available,” Coppernoll said.
So we can expect much more from other manufacturers also.
